A very good, six inch, mahogany pocket compass by Dollond of London c.1800. Silvered dial divided by cardinal points and outer ring of 360 degrees, divided into one degree increments. Dial is near perfect, original needle (points to magnetic North) and glass. Pin in case to lock compass needle. C1830 Staffordshire Child’s Sign-Language Mug

A c1830 English  child’s mug with a blue and white transfer print showing hands demonstrating the letters of the alphabet. In a less enlightened age such mugs were referred to as “deaf and dumb mugs”. No evident cracks or hairlines. The transfer print is not perfect but they seldom are. Height: 2.5″ or 6.5cm. Mid 19th C Rectal Speculum

A  rectal speculum with unplated handle and unplated steel tri-valve blade mechanisms, with the original ebonised obturator, unsigned but probably made by Weiss. George Adams (Jr,?) London, combination bone(I), tortoise shell and silver miniature monocular in red card case c.1800. Rarely used, perfect optics with a 1″ (25 mm). objective lens. Extending to 2 3/4″ ( 2″-50 mm. closed), this instrument exhibits the finest quality of the day. Victorian 44 inch tapered wooden barrel single draw naval telescope C19

A Victorian naval telescope with a long tapered wooden barrel – the visible wood is over 32 inches long, the telescope is 44 inches long with the single brass draw fully extended. Despite the length it is easy to hand hold, the barrel being relatively light. The objective lens is excellent, 2.25 inches diameter, overall the magnification is high, and the focussing is very easy. Cased universal compass sundial by Charles Nephew & Co., Calcutta

Of unusual form, the actual compass / sundial instrument is fixed into the mahogany ebonized case. The three adjustable levelling screws protrude through the bottom of the case allowing the user to level the sundial, as normal, but within its case. The blackened brass ring is fixed to the case and incorporates two bubble levels at 90 degree intervals.
