Description

A 6 x 2 cm. brass compass/sundial by William Simms c.1820 with brass knurled cover and fold down gnomen.

Signed along the trimmed edge “W. Simms”. Paper divided into four 90 degree quadrants, further subdivided into degrees with old mariner’s  directions (NNE, etc.) and fleur-de-lys marking North. Blued steel compass needle still points North. Fold down brass gnomen, locking while upright. Silvered sundial divided into hours and minutes with Roman numerals. Foliate design (wheat ear) across the gnomen bridge. No damage and no issues. Original glass.

Troughton asked Simms to be his partner in 1826.
