Description
An unusual and complete set of apothecary weights with equal arm balance marked D crown J lion passant (Dover Justices) c.1880. I could find NO other extant examples of these rare weight markings. The cylindrical weights (in grams-1 x 20, 2 x 10, 1 x 5, 2 x 2 and 1 x 1) all stamped D crown J with lion passant (see photo), together with wafer weights in 5 ,2 and 1 decigrams. The steel beam measures 14 cm. long with hand forged indicator needle and terminating to two 6 cm. dia. brass pans (original stringing) marked with a 2. The cylindrical weights each have their own drilled hole and the wafer weights are stored in a separate hinged compartment. The oval fruit wood case measures 16 x 7 x 3.5 cm. with brass hinges and hooks intact. All in all, a rare set for the scale connoisseur.
