Description
Two mid-19th century manuscript day books belonging to a Maine physician. Dr. J.D. West practiced in Augusta, Maine and these are his day books for the years 1847 through 1863. Dimensions of taller book: 16″ x 7″. What adds interest to the pair is that one book is devoted to the care he provided to citizens of Augusta and the second is devoted to the care he provided to other physicians in the area. He must have been held in high esteem by his colleagues as a substantial number of the latter sought out his services. “Professional courtesy” was not a custom that Dr. West appears to have subscribed to; his colleagues were all billed for his services. In addition to the two multi-paged books there is also a fair amount of loose paper: receipts and bills for supplies ordered by the good doctor as well as some miscellaneous correspondence. These books and papers gives us a window into the life of a small-town doctor in mid-19th century New England.
