Description
“Museum quality” is a term used much too casually in the antiques business but what we have here certainly qualifies for that accolade. The images show a very fine early 19th-century carved ebony seam rubber , the top and sides of the handle with expressive faces. The owner’s monogram (“R.W.”) is on the rubbing blade. Rubbers of this type were used for flattening seams on sails in preparation for sewing. This rubber was acquired in The Netherlands some years ago and I believe it to be Northern European in origin. 5″ or 12.5 cm.
