Description
SOLD – A ‘Small Best’ binocular microscope by ‘Smith & Beck, 6 Coleman St, London. 1317’. The microscope sits on a single taper column with a compass joint to the top which holds the body. It stands 18.5 inches high when brought to focus and has coarse and fine focus wheels, sub stage wheel of stops and a large articulated plano / concave mirror measuring just over 2 inches in diameter. Accessories include a large bulls eye on stand, two sets of eye pieces, graduated monocular tube, four objectives in canisters, sub stage prism, 3 dark wells and holder, sub stage dark spot condenser, nose piece prism, live box, stage bulls eye, tweezers etc.
The microscope retains all original lacquer with some light wear in areas. The arm to the dark well holder has broken off but could be soldered back (pictured). There is an erecting lens piece which screws into the draw tube; small crack to one of the outside lenses (does not affect viewing). All contained in original mahogany case with lock, key and handle.
Smith & Beck records show the microscope originally sold on 21/12/1858 for £518.
