Description
A good example of an early 19th-century silver sick syphon. It is unmarked, suggesting that it may be American–Michael Clayton ( “Collector’s Dictionary of silver and Gold”, 1971) contends that that most of these are. However, Elisaberh Bennion (“Antique Medical Instruments”,1979–see first image), states that they were also made in the UK and I concur, having seen several UK hallmarked examples over the years. Since hallmarking was not always required on silver small work made in the UK, it makes it difficult to arrive at a country of origin. So, maybe UK, maybe American. It is a substantial example (weight 44 grams and length is 17cm). Condition is excellent: there are no dents/bruises–a few minor light scratches on the exterior of the grill–see images. What can be seen on the interior of the grill are remnants of silver polish.
