Description
Ryland Schematic Eye, c1910. The Hu-Model Patent No 4386 used for instructing fledgling ophthalmogists. The British Optical Association Museum’s site describes it as: “Practice eye consisting of a black metal cylinder on a stand with round base. Iris diaphragm. Double drop cell on projecting arm. Fundus back. Four glass model eye globes ground to the standard refractive conditions of Myopia, Hypermetropia, Emmetropia and Astigmatism. Contained in dark brown Morocco leather case. Overall: 42 x 130 x 104 mm”. In good working order, with some very minor loss of finish and minor wear to outside of case. The Ryland should not be confused with the tinny schematic eyes, having cardboard retinas depicting various conditions, that often appear often on the Internet. The Keystone Magazine of Optometry for July 1910:650 notes the introduction of this new model schematic eye and provides an image of it. This enables us to date it with some precision.
