Description
MACGRATH (W.), Practical Notebook, London, Wyman and sons, [December 1899- February 1903]
Large square octavo of 3 leaves of handwritten text, 16 leaves of crystallographic drawings, 1 leaf of a microscope drawing, 13 leaves of mineralogical microscopy drawings with their explanatory leaf printed and bearing the title of “Royal College of Science, London. Geological division” and two handwritten leaves, then 10 maps and plans including 5 printed ones with handcolored and 5 large handwritten geological maps in color, some with explanatory leaves of the Royal college of science; contemporary half-shagreen, smooth spine (lack of leather on the spine, covers with loss of paper).
Learning crystallography, mineralogy and geology in London in 1900.
Rare “notebook” with 119 drawings of crystal models, 57 drawings of microscope views of thin sections of mineralogy , 5 large handwritten maps of geological sections of the London area and 1 drawing with moveable part for learning to draw geological map. The manuscript is signed by W. Macgrath, whom we have not been able to identify.
This notebook from a student at the Royal College of Science in London is a notebook for practical work given for the geology courses: the student must learn to draw the different models of crystals, learn to make and reproduce numerous observations under microscopes of thin sections of mineralogy and be able to draw geology maps according to printed instructions/exercises.
At the beginning of the last section devoted to geological maps, a drawing with three movable elements, constructed by the student, allows to represent in volume the dip and stricke for the construction of an inclined plane on a flat surface.
The manuscript is interspersed with exercise sheets, printed by Wyman & Sons for the Royal College of Science, whose manuscript drawings and maps constitute the result produced by the student.
In addition to the five manuscript maps, five printed maps colored by the student in particular a map of the geological strata of England.
A rich manuscript illustrated with crystallography and mineralogy. Very rare object.
