Description

A rare combination pocket barometer and compass by J.D. Siddall, the Cross (Bridge Street), Chester c.1880.

Measuring 2 inches (5cm.) in diameter, this gilt brass compendium has seen little use. The fully compensating barometer with silvered dial measures barometric pressure from 23-31 inches and altitude from 0-8000 feet (ballooning?). The needle has been set for 300 feet and responds well when bag tested. Suspension loop and bevelled glass.

On the reverse is a 2 inch compass with locking tab/bar and jewelled pivot point. The silvered dial is divided in to 4-90 degree quadrants and points North (slight oxidation of the silver at the locking tab point from moisture/salt). The compass threads on to the reverse of the barometer to be used separately, if desired. Judging by the almost perfect gilding internally, they were never separated for this purpose. Beautifully machined top and bottom and the respective glasses are scratch free.

John Davies Siddall was an optician at the Cross, near Bridge Street, Chester from 1844-1914. The business exists to this day.
