Description

Moving coil brass galvanometer with three-screw base, instrument signed Philip Harris & co Birmingham England n. 7954 made in the early 1900, a tool used as a detector of direct current and of very weak intensities. Very good condition. Height 23 cm.

The Philip Harris Ltd firm was a British laboratory supply company, well known to all science teachers in the UK and world-wide as one of the most important suppliers for the peculiar needs of schools. The company was originally based in Digbeth, Birmingham and was established by Thomas Ellis, a surgeon, in 1817. Philip Harris joined Ellis in 1825. They started manufacturing medicines in 1866, adding to their sales of chemist and surgical products: the company traded in Bullring, Birmingham, until 1889. They moved to 144-146 Edmund Street at the beginning of 1900.
