Description
Standing 16 inches tall, this CCDS Continental Model, serial number 38542 sold for $200 in 1900 ($7500 USD today).
Horseshoe base, elaborate polarising substage (patented Jan.3, 1899) perfect for photo-micrography and minerology with a machined Damask pattern, fully rotatable, 4 inch circular mechanical stage, engine divided internally and externally. A pleasing combination of bright brass and nickel steel, this instrument was B&L’s top of the line (only to be outdone by the DOUBLE pillar DDS model). Rack and pinion are diagonally cut for smooth coarse adjustment with fine focus by a graduated wheel atop the pillar. Monocular body tube can be extended or removed for micro-photography. The microscope can be fully inclined (very stable) and locked using the pleasing, tapering ceramic? handle. Both plano and concave mirrors are in excellent condition with no losses or spidering of the silvered surfaces.
The engraved objectives are all cased to be used on the triple nosepiece. They include: 3 inch, 2 inch, 2/3, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/12 Oil and a 47.5X (1/5 inch) Oil Immersion objective with correction collar. There are two oculars (eyepieces) marked 1/2 and 1 inch (20 and 10X respectively). They are housed in their mahogany sleeves stored on either side of the mahogany case, internally.
The case measures 16 x 9 x8 inches with oblong, nickel steel drop handle and functional lock and key.
Mechanically and cosmetically near perfect with only a minor scratch on the foot. Lacquer is 99.9%.
The CCDS model is identical to the DDS Grand model except for scale (dimensionally 1 inch smaller in every respect).
