Description
Beautiful mine compass in its original box, transport shape, worn on the belt.
The compass is signed Maison de l’Ingénieur Chevallier Opticien Place du Pont Neuf 15 Paris.
The store moved to 15, place du Pont-Neuf later in 1842. The attribution of this date is based on Chevallier’s catalog of 1842, which provided this address. A notice published in March 1843 reminded the public of the store’s move, suggesting it may have occurred in late 1842.
Chevallier’s catalog indicates that the move was precipitated by the construction of the Palais de Justice which interfered with the former site of the workshop. JGA Chevallier died on January 10, 1848.
