Description
This is quite a large example of Casella’s Lean Dial, the compass body diameter measuring 6.25 inches across, the silvered dial with cardinal points and divided from 0 – 90 – 90 – 0 etc, the outer scale from 0 – 360 divided down to 1 degree, signed ‘L Casella. Maker to the Admiralty & Ordnance. London 3559’.
The instrument can be set with either two sighting vanes or with the telescope mounted over the half circle. The half circle measures 9.5″ across and each side has engraved scales either side engraved from 90 – 0 – 90 reading to one degree, with vernier scale and fine thumb wheel adjuster. The dial can be turned slowly via the large thumb wheel to the underside. The dial can be locked in place with the brass pin.
The 8.5″ telescope has rack and pinion focussing and gives a sharp, clear inverted image.
Very clean and held within the original mahogany case (12″ x 11″)
