Description

Gunner’s Level and Gauge

Early 17th century

Italy

Heavy brass, cm 33.2 x 10.6; thickness 6 mm.

The long leg of this instrument enables it to be placed in the barrel of a gun to read elevations against a scale of degres. The range of the fire was calculated on the basis of the weitght and caliber of the ball.

The instrument also serves as a gunnery gauge, carrying scales for stone (“PIETRA”) and iron (“FERRO”) and measures for PALMI (palms) and PIEDI (feet).

————–

As an “every day use” instrument for the gunner, it was figured in some 17th century treatises on gunnery, such as P. Sardi’s Artiglieria 1689 (1st.1621) and L. Colliado Pratica manuale dell’Artiglieria 1606.
