Description
A good set of Georgian coin/gold scales by Samuel Read, St. Anne’s Lane, London c.1748 in flawless sharkskin case with red velvet liner. Good trade label with Read’s address, Lady of Justice (blindfolded with scales and sword) and the accepted coinage weights of that date. After the edict of 1772, the curency was changed (and de-valued) to reflect the increasing problem of forgeries and coin clipping, hence there are two c.1772 coin weights included marked 5 and 8 (Guinea) and 2 and 16 (half Guinea).
The 13 cm. beam (with some rust) terminates with two U-shaped holders for the 5 cm. brass pans (original green stringing), gallows, indicator and drop are simple, with tassel and string to hold on to. The 14.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 sharkskin case is flawless with both ornate C-hooks intact.
Samuel Read was registered at St. Anne’s Lane as working as a scale maker in 1748 (Clifton) and the coinage denomination and description were provided by Sheppard and Musham-Money, Scales and Weights.
