Description
A 30 cm. tall compound monocular microscope with 3 objectives, stage forceps, live box insert, etc. on round weighted base in original case by R. B. Bate with trade label (21 Poultry) in the lid of the mahogany case measuring 21 x 17 x 6 cm. deep (functional lock and key).
Well used with 80% original golden lacquer and 50% silvering to the 4 cm. one sided mirror, this microscope has good optics, excellent internal rack and and pinion to the circular upright. Slip in limb, threaded body tube and coarse focussing by triple knurled knob. Not the best example of his work and priced accordingly. Postage extra as this is a heavy instrument.
Robert Brettell Bate (1782-1847) was at this address after the mid 1820’s when he was given a Royal Warrant and moved the premises from No. 17 to concentrate on the making of hydrometers, rather than an array of scientific instruments. An excellent optician and machinist (some of his earlier instruments were fabulous and highly sought after) but as he aged he knew which side of the toast was buttered. Sikes bought the Company from his widow/estate and continued the Gov’t cash cow.
