A fine and unusual spring loaded outside caliper sitting on tripod legs with ebony handle, cased.
Signed Elliott Bros, 30 Strand, London in flowing script, this rare item measures diameters/thickness with uncanny accuracy from 0-22 mm. in 0.1 mm. increments using a needle gauge on central square pivot over a protractor-like semi-circle. Constructed of German silver/nickel steel, it has seen minor use with only small areas of wear. Victorian royal blue liner in domed mahogany case missing one hook. A rarity for the machinist/clock maker/microscopist with a spring loaded automatic reset. Possibly used for measuring the thickness of cover slips. Instrument is 7 x 2 inches. Case is 8 x 3 x 2 1/2 inches deep.
Elliot Brothers firm existed for over 100 years under various names but for only a short time (1857-1870) at this address.
