Description
An outstanding cupping/bleeding set with carrying handle and owners name inscribed to the lid. Complete and rarely used, the early Victorian set consists of an unsigned scarificator with strong spring action, blades intact, blued screws, depth gauge marked AA, finely knurled adjustment knob and steel trigger. In addition, there are four (4) hand blown, fire cupping glasses of varying depths and diameters (no chips to edges), a nickeled steel wick holder with bulbous end and an alcohol/spirits bottle with ground glass stopper. The red velvet lined mahogany case is in very good condition (sans lock escutcheon plate and key) with the owner’s name “E. Tothill, Staines” engraved on the brass lift up handle. The flame mahogany case measures 8 x 6 x 4 inches (20 x 15 x 10 cm.). This set, although unsigned, is of the highest quality and was probably produced right on the cusp of the Georgian/Victorian eras.
Edward Tothill came from a wealthy background and lived in a Georgian/Victorian house on trendy Tothill Street (family home?) in Staines-upon-Thames until his death in 1879. No mention of achievements, just old money from family industry. Appears to be a gift and was probably used infrequently with unpleasant results !!! Will look for a key.
