IMPORTANT EVEREST THEODOLITE OF LARGE PROPORTIONS WITH 8" SILVER HORIZONTAL CIRCLE WITH FOUR SILVER VERNIERS A, B, C & D THE 360 DEGREE SCALE IS DIVIDED IN 10 MINUTE DIVISIONS, VERNIERS READING TO 10 SECONDS OF ARC. THE REVERSIBLE TELESCOPE IS 18.1/2" INCHES LONG. MAIN BRASS BARREL IS 2" INCHES DIA. O.G. HAS 2" GLASS SHOWING. ORIGINAL GOLD LACQUER & PINE BOXES ( ONE BOX BOTTOM REPLACED ). THERE ARE TWIN READERS ON THE HORIZONTAL CIRCLE AND THE TWIN VERTICAL ARCS HAVE A DETACHABLE PAIR OF READERS THE ARCS HAVE SILVER SCALES OF 20-0-30 DEGREES DIVIDED IN 10 MINUTE DIVISIONS ALSO READING TO 10 SECONDS OF ARC. HENRY BARROW OF LONDON: WORKED FOR DOLLOND & TROUGHTON AND WAS A COMPETENT INSTRUMENT MAKER, HE WAS INVOLVED WITH SIR GEORGE EVEREST IN THE GREAT SURVEY OF INDIA. EVEREST REQUESTED A INSTRUMENT MAKER SHOULD BE IN INDIA FOR RUNNING REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE. HENRY BARROWS WAS APPOINTED TO THE JOB IN INDIA. EVEREST PRAISED BARROWS WORKMANSHIP SAYING: I MUST DO THAT ARTIST ( BARROW ) THE JUSTICE TO SAY THAT FOR EXCELLENCE OF WORKMANSHIP, ACCURACY OF DIVISION, STEADINESS, REGULARITY & GLIBNESS OF MOTION, GENERAL NEATNESS, ELEGANCE & NICE FITTING OF ALL ITS PARTS, NOT ONLY WERE MY EXPECTATIONS EXCEEDED BUT I REALLY THINK IT IS AS A WHOLE AS UNRIVALLED IN THE WORLD AS IT IS UNIQUE. I DO BELIEVE THIS INSTRUMENT WAS A COMMISSION IT HAS ALL THE RIGHT NAMES ON IT: TROUGHTON & SIMMS & BARROW.. WETHER IT WAS USED OR EVER WENT TO INDIA ON THE GREAD TRIGONOMETRICAL SURVEY OF INDIA I CAN’T SAY. IN 1825 EVEREST RETURNED TO ENGLAND FOR A PERIOD, RETURNING TO INDIA IN 1830 & SPENT CONSIDERABLE TIME IN THE WORKSHOPS OF TROUGHTON & SIMMS.
