Description

Copernicus-type planetary representing the solar system with in order from the centre:

The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth in its meridian with the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Each planet, except the Earth, is represented by a cardboard disc covered with a printed paper mentioning the name and the period of revolution of the planet.

The whole is set in a black and gold lacquered wooden frame representing a floral decoration (said to be Abbé Nollet’s).

This support consists of a circular foot with four arms supporting the equatorial table, octagonal in shape, which is covered with a printed and watercoloured paper representing the Zodiac and the Calendar with the main winds.

Dimensions: total height 23 cm / height of the equatorial table 20.4 cm / diameter 25 cm.

France dated before 1786 (date of the discovery of Uranus), probably around 1770/1780.

Attributed to Fortin.

Note: a similar mechanical example signed “Fortin à Paris” is in the collections of the Langres Museum.
