Description

A Brendel botanical model of the “Phytophthora infestans, de Bary No 10 K – Kartoffelkrankheit Sporangium mit Schwärmsporen”.  It depicts the enlarged infected potato disease Phytophthora infestans, that causes the serious potato and tomato disease known as late blight or potato blight.

Brendel made two models of the Phytophthora infestans, disease. The first was the leaf intersection, which we had previously. The second, this one shows the swarming spores. These swarming spores (zoospores) can swim in water and are attracted to germinated seeds or young roots and can live under extreme temperatures and dehydration. Phytophthora infestans is the cause of late blight (phytophthora) in potatoes and tomatoes. It was the cause of the Irish famine (1845-1850).

The model is manufactured by Robert Brendel (1821-1898), Breslau, nowadays Wroclaw, Poland. The retailer was Merkelbach & Co, Amsterdam. This model is is in perfect condion. It arises from an ebonized base with the paper mache model resting on top in a socket.

Height: 27 cm high.
