Description
Batten’s sphygmometer in its original case and in excellent mechanical/cosmetic condition. This small instrument (only 2.75″ in length!) is a rarity. It is not in the Naqvi and Blaufox book on on BP measurement but since acquiring it we’ve been able to find a catalog listing (see last image) and an article, published in 1892 , in which Batten introduced it to the British medical community–see link that follows. While it superficially resembles Cruise’s sphygmometer, it was introduced 16 years earlier. It would appear that Cruise may have drawn upon the Batten sphygmometer in designing his instrument. As best as we’ve able to establish, only Down Bros made this instrument.
