Description

A quite early example of a tooth key with a rotation of the claw so that it could be used on either side of the mouth.

The early example with its typical handle from early period is signed “Simpson” for Robert Simpson, active before 1800 in London. Bennion cites about Robert Simpson : “In 1799, Robert Simpson patented an instrument with a sprung claw which was attached to te tooth by means of forceps. When the forceps was removed, a key-like mechanism was applied which could be turned in any desired direction to remove the tooth” (Bennion, Dental instruments, page 47).

A fine, early and rare example by an early and innovative London surgical maker.

14cm lenght.
