Description

An octagonal horizontal sundial and monolatitude-type made in brass and bearing the large signature of Nicolas à Bion in Paris. The instrument can be dated to the end of the 17th century, around 1680.

The plate is engraved with a single hour scale for the latitude of 49th, the latitude of Paris. The folding gnomon is beautifully engraved with a leaf decoration.

The original needle works perfectly. The instrument does’t show any restoration. We can note only an old cleaning.

The instrument is kept in a case from the period but which is not its own, a little too large.

Sundial size: 6.9×5.9cm.

An early Butterfield-type fixe-latitude by the famous French maker, Nicolas Bion.
