Description
SOLD – A small size portable brass telescope and stand, signed on the draw tube, ‘W & S Jones, 30 Holborn, London’; they worked from 1791 – 1859.
This telescope is designed for the draw tube, eye-piece, column and legs to be packed neatly into the barrel. The user removes the telescope from its case, unscrews the back collar and pulls out the tripod, eye-piece etc from the barrel. The tripod column fits in a reverse position to the stand. The user slides the top of the tripod onto the specially fitted lug on the telescope, then attaches the back collar and slides the draw tube in place.
The thumb wheel and thread on the draw tube is for fine focus.
The length at focus is 13″ (33 cms), the height is 10″ (25 cms). It has a triple element lens of 32mm diameter and gives a magnification of 18 x, giving a fine, clear view. The eye-piece has a slider which brings a dark filter glass in to view allowing the telescope to be used for viewing towards the sun.
Please note the additional astronomical eye-piece which is screw fitted to the compass joint at the top of the tripod. This can be fitted to the draw tube to give the user a clear, inverted image.
The telescope compacts to fit into its card tube (length of tube 9.25″).
Some of the features of this telescope are similar to larger ones of the day but a miniature version.
