Description
A triangular prism known as Newton’s prism, used in experiments on diffraction or the decomposition of light.
The prism is mounted in a brass triangle connected to a wheel allowing it to pivot on itself. The whole assembly stands on a blackened brass arm resting on a sliding tube to adjust the instrument’s height.
The prism measures 8.5 cm in height and 3.3 cm on each side; the entire prism at its lowest point is 36 cm in height.
Note the perfect condition of the original prism, which does not have a single small chip.
The instrument is unsigned but is certainly French, circa 1880-1890.
A rare find in such beautiful condition.
