A fine brass bound mahogany presentation cased set or surgical instruments by Arnold & Sons, circa 1880, the presentation plaque to the lid engraved, ‘Presented To, Archibald Finlay, Surgeon, With a Varity of other Surgical Instruments, as a mark of respect by his friends & admirers on his leaving Bedlington and surrounding district, for his skill and ability shown during the three years he has practiced amongst them’

The instruments have been well cared for and it is doubtful that they have been used. There are a few small items missing and two bone handled scalpels have probably been added later. The case measures W 41 cm x H 8.5 cm x D 16.5 cm.

With inlaid address plaque to the inner case, ‘Arnold & Sons, 35 & 36 West Smithfield’.
