Giovanni Gualandi (1819-1894) was an Italian physician and psychiatrist born on June 1, 1819, in Bologna. He was the eldest of seven children and pursued his medical studies in his hometown. Gualandi began his career at the psychiatric section of the S. Orsola Hospital, where his father was the head physician.

In 1849, he traveled to Paris, where he was influenced by the religious, political, and scientific environment. He was particularly inspired by the works of Frédéric-Antoine Ozanam and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul1. Upon returning to Italy, he played a significant role in the establishment of the first Saint Vincent de Paul conference in Bologna.

In 1850, Gualandi was appointed as the director of the S. Maria della Pietà psychiatric hospital in Rome. His tenure marked a shift towards a more professional and clinical approach to psychiatric care, moving away from the previously more religiously oriented management
