Description
This is an interesting and rare implement. It is fully hallmarked for London 1813 and the maker is Joseph Angell. It is also engraved with a crest and the owner’s initials. Length: 5.2″ or 13cm approx. Very good condition.
Not being able to confidently establish the use of this implement, I consulted one of the UK’s most knowledgeable silver small-work dealers and he responded as follows: ” I have had two of these spoons over the years, all of the same period. I have never been entirely certain as to their function but the shaping of the handle suggested a combination of knife with spoon. It is possible that the purpose was for feeding infants but I had not ruled out the feeding of adults incapacitated in some way. I would be interesting to track down an owner from the combination of crest and initials but that might be difficult.”
