Description
Although much smaller than a typical Triunial or Triple Magic Lantern this miniature version is designed to project standard 3 ¼ in sq glass slides.
The only reference I can find relating to a similar size triple lantern is in the Magic Lantern Society publication ‘Servants of Light’ page 40 illustration 27, ‘The Miniature Malden Triple’ by W.C.Hughes before 1893. Used regularly by Lanternist B.J.Malden Esq .
Such small Triunials had the welcome advantage over the larger ones, being easily portable , ( about ½ -2/3 lighter and only the height of a Biunial – 23 in ).
This particular example has no makers name or number and was probably a one off by a cabinet maker made to a specific request by a local lanternist. The lantern is complete with three matching limelight burners mounted by screws at the rear .There is no evidence of dissolving taps being fitted and hardly enough room for them, so mixing and dissolving control apparatus of the oxygen and hydrogen was probably mounted on a separate base, as was common with American makers such as McIntosh ,McAlister and Colt.
In order for the lantern to be used safely I have provided three adjustable halogen lamp trays with 12v 50w reflector lamps which give sufficient brightness for projected distance up to 16 feet. The projection lenses have a focal length of 5 in and are in good condition as are also the 4in diameter condensers. Rack & pinions are good and smooth but the middle one needs pulling out a little by hand for it to engage. Angle adjustment of the lenses is by knurled screws at the corners of the back plates and held in position by steel leaf springs at the back. The wood is mahogany and the metal top is a replacement for the missing original one. Total height,-23 ½ ins Weight,- 13 Kilos.
